5 lessons to learn from the life of Prophet Yuusuf

Prophet Yuusuf (peace be upon his noble soul) is one of the Messengers (peace be upon their souls) sent to disseminate the truth about monotheism to specific people.
 - Yuusuf is the Arabic form of Joseph - His father's name was Prophet Y'aqoob (Jacob), who was also a Messenger of Allah (peace be upon his soul) - He passed through many challenges before he became one of the greatest men in history Although, Prophet Yuusuf is not among the men known as ‘Uulul Azmi mina Rasul,’ which Allah mentioned in the Glorious Qur'an, he was a unique creature, as he was handsome to a fault.

Chapter 12 of the Glorious Qur'an is named after Prophet Yuusuf. It is called Suuratul Yuusuf. Chapter 12 was revealed by Allah through Angel Jibril (Gabriel) to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon his noble soul) in the city of Makkah, in modern day Saudi Arabia.
The whole of Suuratul Yuusuf contains plethora of lessons about the life of Yuusuf, According to chapter 12 verse 4, Yuusuf's trouble started early in life, when he told his father as reported in the verse that: “When Yuusuf told his father: O my father, indeed I have seen in a dream, eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.” In the subsequent verse of the same chapter, that is verse 5, Ya'aqoob said: “O my son, do not relate your vision (dream) to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed, Satan to man, is a manifest enemy.” And really, his brothers plotted against him, but he had the last laugh at the end of the day.
Also, almost all his siblings were filled with envy towards him. They held the belief that their father preferred him over all of them. Indeed, Prophet Yuusuf was the apple of his father's eyes.

1.    Patience and perseverance
Yuusuf suffered because he was falsely accused. Starting from his brother, to when they put him inside a well, to when they sold him out as a slave to an unknown land, to when the wife of his boss wanted to have extramarital affair with him and he declined, to when he was jailed as a result of the lies his master's wife cooked up against him, Yuusuf was patient and persevered, as he knew Allah will absolve him of all the allegation. At the end of the day, he was found to be innocent. The fruit of his patience was being made a Prime Minister in Egypt. That is from being called a prisoner to being addressed as a Prime Minister.
2.     Humility
Even when the son of Ya'aqoob became a Prime Minister, he never allowed his high position and newly found status go into his head. He was humble to everybody and listened to all cadre of people in the society. This is a big lesson for leaders in Nigeria at every level of all forms of what is called leadership, be it political or religious.
3.     Sincere intention
Yuusuf's brother betrayed him. They forgot that blood is thicker than water. A person loved by Allah, was made to look ordinary. Despite the fact that his brothers treated him badly, he attended to them when they came from Israel to Egypt to get food. He could have decided to jail them instantly, but he did not do such a thing.
4.     Depending on the Creator alone
This is one of the most important aspects of life. Muslims find it very difficult to absolutely rely on their Creator for what they need. Yuusuf knew from day one that his dream would come into reality. He prayed to Allah frequently, even while spending several years in the prison for the sin he never committed. His dependence on Allah made the king contact him to explain the strange dream he had. He explained the dream perfectly and was then given the task to oversee the agricultural affairs of Egypt then.
5.     Spirit of forgiveness
As they say, to forgive is divine. Yuusuf never paid back his brothers or the woman who lied on him, in their own coins. He buried the hatchet and allowed by gone to be by gone.
