12 Way on How to Maintain a Healthy Working Relationship with Colleagues

As employees, we spend a significant part of our time in the workplace. Our associates, team members, supervisors, and managers play a substantial role in the quality of our daily working experience, and influence our outlook considerably. The truth is that the state of our relationships with coworkers affects us greatly, in our ability to succeed professionally and in our emotional well-being.

Naturally then, it is in our best interests, to form healthy, effective relationships with colleagues. This is not always going to be a straightforward task. The workplace brings together a mixed bag of people, not of our choosing, with different values, cultures, expectations, age ranges, and personalities – all sources of potential conflict. It is not surprising that disagreements and tensions arise when people have little idea of suitable strategies for dealing with others effectively.
Employers today are seeking individuals with strong skills in building relationships, communicating and working effectively in a team. They know the importance of these abilities and how they play an essential role in the performance of the entire workplace. By practicing and building these skills, we can make our working lives a great deal more pleasant and efficient.

How to Maintain Good Work Relationships:

1.       Respect
Respect is the most basic and effective foundation for how to maintain a good relationship at work. All people have demand for being self-esteem and esteem from others. Hence, if you want to have a good relationship and keep it well, you must learn how to respect your colleagues. It means that, you treat all the people with the same courtesy as the way you hope to get from them. Furthermore, you cannot hope everyone have the same thoughts as you do. You should know how to accept and respect the others’ differences so as to learn from each other for the best things at work.

2.       Communication
Communicate with others honestly and professionally. Convey your opinions and concerns while listening to other points of view. Nobody appreciates a ‘know-it- all’ attitude. Try not to interrupt people in conversation or meetings, and never put them down in an arrogant fashion. Showing initiative is a great thing, but it needs to be used by including others and receiving their support. Remember the art of good communication means listening as much as speaking.

3.       Be positive
A positive attitude will help you strengthen and maintain your good relationship with your coworker. It can be difficult all the times. However, you can change your negative attitude gradually by considering your negative attitude of any problem and find out the good in every situation, at the same time, you have to learn how to keep your positive attitude and control yourself as well. You may find other good changes from them. Of course, you may work with the people you do not like because of the ethical or moral differences. Try to make the relationship the best that you can.

4.       Manage Your Boundaries
Make sure that you set and manage boundaries   properly, all of us want to have friends at work, but, occasionally, a friendship can start to impact our jobs, especially when a friend or colleague begins to monopolize our time. If this happens, it's important that you're assertive   about your boundaries, and that you know how much time you can devote during the work day for social interactions.

5.       Get Your Job Done
Your boss and your coworkers often expect that you can finish your work in the best way you can. Instead of spending too much of your time on personal phone calls or gossiping, you should focus on finishing your work well. If you cannot get your job done and feel that staying late is necessary, you should do it. This action means that you are responsible for your work. Getting your job done also contribute to build a healthy relationship with your colleagues in the workplace. Besides that, it can help for how to maintain a good relationship at work because anyone wants to keep a good connection to an excellent staff with high responsibility.

6.       Help Each Other
All of us may face with difficulty in any time and need the help from someone. Then, you should give them a helping hand as you can because you may need their help in the future. So do your coworkers. In case your colleagues cannot finish their jobs and need your help to get the job done, you should try to help them. And your employer will highly appreciate it. It may be good for your job in the future.

7.       Avoid Gossiping
Don't gossip, office politics and "gossip" are major relationship killers at work. If you're experiencing conflict with someone in your group, talk to them directly about the problem. Gossiping about the situation with other colleagues will only exacerbate the situation, and will cause mistrust and animosity between you.

8.       Avoid Cliques
Hanging out solely with one group, workmates in the immediate vicinity, those on your classification level, your own age group, or any other special interest group will be perceived as excluding others. Branching out and including all groups is good practice. This way you won’t be alienating anyone and will be welcome in a range of situations.

9.       Appreciate Others
Show your appreciation whenever someone helps you. Everyone, from your boss to the office cleaner, wants to feel that their work is appreciated. So, genuinely compliment the people around you when they do something well. This will open the door to great work relationships.

10.   Resolve The Conflicts Early
If you are facing up with a negative situation, you should not let it develop. Try to have a plan to deal with it promptly, directly, honestly, courteously, and professionally. Both of you can work together for a long time. So resolving the conflicts as early as you can in order to minimize its influence on your relationship as well as your work. Avoid bringing it to your manager. You can do it only when your colleague and you cannot find out the best way to resolve it.

11.   Give Credit
Always praise coworkers who do well. Paying tribute where it is due will always create a healthy respect with colleagues. Just make sure not to use praise as a means of manipulating people to do what you want. Also, when you constantly speak positively about others, then people will notice this and recognize you as a better and happier person. Also remember a simple thank you goes a long way! Words and actions go a long way in building strong, happy relationships.

12.   Be On Time
This is a certain things you must do in a workplace. However, some people think that working late for about some minutes is nothing. It is wrong. Arriving early at least 15 minutes every day is always a good way to make a good impression with your colleagues, especially when you are a newcomer. It expresses somewhat your responsibility with your work. Of course, your employer will appreciate your good attitude for work. It can be one of the advantages for promotion in the future.

Difficult Relationships
Occasionally, you'll have to work with someone you don't like  , or someone that you simply can't relate to. But, for the sake of your work, it's essential you maintain a professional relationship with them. When this happens, make an effort to get to know the person. It's likely that they know full well that the two of you aren't on the best terms, so make the first move to improve the relationship by engaging them in a genuine conversation, or by inviting them out to lunch.
While you're talking, try not to be too guarded. Ask them about their background, interests and past successes. Instead of putting energy into your differences, focus on finding things that you have in common. Just remember – not all relationships will be great; but you can make sure that they are, at least, workable!
