Eid el Kabir is here again which is known as the Festival of
Sacrifice. In Nigeria, the most preferred option of sacrifice is ram or cow,
depending on the individual’s financial strength.
The Sacrifice may be kept for the personal use of the one
that killed it with his family, but its advised that it’s most rewarding to
distribute one-third among the poor, another one-third among his relatives and
then, keep the rest for his personal consumption, as learn from the teachings
of the Holy Prophet.
A Madrasah scholar, Mallam Haruna, warned against selling
parts of the sacrificed animal, also said parts of it must not be given to
butchers as part payment for their services. He emphasized that as long as the
animal is for sacrifice, not even its skin should be sold as is the case with
some people.
Preparation of Sallah meat is usually done in a ceremonious
manner, as the quantity of the meat prepared is usually much which can be
overwhelming for the person handling it.
Here are 3 simple ways of preparing
Sallah meat for the whole family:
Stewed:
Tomato stew is one of Nigeria’s popular dishes, but stew is
not just the name of a dish, it is also a cooking method. Stew has been defined
by wikipedia as a combination of solid food, cooked in liquid and served in
gravy. When cuts of meat are stewed they become flavorful and tender. So for a tenderer
and super flavored ram meat this sallah, there is no doubt that stewing is a
good way to go.
Grilled:
This is another healthy cooking method of ram, and it
involves direct dry heat to make the meat tender. The key to making a perfect
grilled ram meat lies in the cut and seasoning of the meat. According to living
direct, some of the advantages of grilling meat include eating less fat,
because the excess fat cooks off and drips off the grates. Also, when your ram
is grilled, it actually preserves more riboflavin and thiamine. Both of these
nutrients play an important role in a healthy diet. This is of course a perfect
combo for some sallah jollof. Oiling your meat with vegetable cooking oil while
grilling, does not only keep it from sticking, but also adds flavor to the ram
meat.
Stir Fry:
Stir fry is an amazing cooking method that involves cooking
with oil in very high heat. Stir frying your ram meat doesn’t only leave it
tasting really succulent, but gives it a fresh taste. The stir frying method
also allows you throw in other options like vegetables. One of the advantages
of making your sallah ram a stir fry is that the cooking method allows you cook
in bulk that way there’s enough to share with family and friends.
