Abeokuta — Ogun State government and the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) yesterday stormed markets in Abeokuta in search of edible cow hide, commonly called ponmo.
The deadly meat was said to have been imported by some desperate traders from some West African countries.
The inspection team which was led by the commissioner for agriculture, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun and accompanied by the state NAFDAC coordinator, Ugochukwu Ilo, inspected Kuto, Panseke, Omida and Itokun markets.
The inspection team was also accompanied by environmental officers, but, at the end of the about five hours exercise, no such meat was found.
Sokefun urged market women to be on the lookout and also be careful with what they consume, saying: "We are doing this because of you people's welfare."
Ilo, who spoke with the journalists at Itoku market after the inspection, said that they embarked on the inspection to look out for the toxic ponmo.
Asked whether he suspected any foul play, Ilo simple said: "I am not suspecting any foul play. We are only on the lookout," explaining that NAFDAC was on the lookout for the importer of the poisonous ponmo.
The director of the veterinary services from the ministry of agriculture, Mr. Dotun Sorunke, stated that there was strict compliance by the market women based on the result of the inspection.
