Seven persons were killed on Saturday when a passenger boat conveying 20 people capsized at Badore in Eti-Osa local government area of Lagos.
Ibrahim Farinloye, south-west spokesman of The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the accident, saying it occurred around 10am. Farinloye said 13 passengers were rescued and responding to treatment at Ijede General Hospita.
“The incident occurred at about 10.00 this morning,” he said. “The boat with 17 people on board which was coming from Ijede capsized at Badore.” Officials of Lagos State Water Ways Authority, Marine Police, National Inland Water Ways Authority, and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, also took part in the rescue operation. Michael Akindele, general manager of LASEMA, said investigation revealed that the ill-fated boat belonged to Aki Marine. Akindele added that his agency was still expecting the boat manifest. He advised boat operators and passengers to observe necessary safety measures, such as the use of life jacket and regular checks of boat facilities, before embarking on water transportation
