Alleged fake syrup producer remanded in prison

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has remanded an alleged fake codeine cough syrup producer, Mr. Kenneth Chiokwe, in prison custody following his arraignment by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.
The suspect was arraigned before Justice Jude Kanyioh Dagat.

Prosecuting counsel, Umar Shamaki told the court that the accused imported the fake product and that the accused committed the offence at Church Street, Idumota, Lagos State, within the jurisdiction of the court.
Defence counsel, Chukwudi Nneke in his bail application, urged the court to admit the accused to bail because the offence was a bailable one.
The prosecution did not oppose to the bail application but prayed the court to impose stringent conditions.
Justice Dagat, in a short ruling, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N1 million and two sureties in like sum.
One of the sureties must be a relative of the accused and the second a landed property owner within the court’s jurisdiction, with evidence of three years tax clearance.
The court ordered the remand of the accused until his bail conditions are perfected and adjourned to April 5 for trial.
