The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) yesterday said would build a mega filling station in each of the senatorial district in Nigeria, translating to 109 stations nationwide.
It added that this would cater for petroleum products needs of residents in the zones.
NNPC’ Group Executive Director, Commercial and Investment, Dr. Babatunde Adeniran, stated in a statement from the corporation’s spokesman, Ohi Alegbe, that the planned construction of the new stations are in line with NNPC’s desire to ensure efficient distribution and country-wide penetration of petroleum products.
It added that this would cater for petroleum products needs of residents in the zones.

The statement which was made available in Abuja, said the corporation has already begun nationwide consultation with stakeholders to get them to support the planned expansion of its retail outlets across the country.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, had last week disclosed that the corporation was finalising plans to build new mega filling stations either in partnership with interested investors or on its own.

But Adeniran who visited the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai; Jigawa State, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, and that of Kano, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, explained that under the expansion plan, NNPC would seek to increase its market share in the country’s retail petroleum business from the current 12 per cent to an appreciable level.
He noted that by building a mega station in every senatorial district in the country in the months ahead, the corporation would bring products closer to the people.
According to him, the visit to the governors was to get their support in the provision of sizable plots of land for the construction of the new petrol stations in the state.

“Our mission is to build three mega stations, one each in the three senatorial districts of the state. We need about five thousand square metres for each of the station.
“Each station will have six pumps including that of liquefied petroleum gas which is domestic gas,” Adeniran told El-Rufai.

El-Rufai reportedly gave his approval for the required plots of land to be made available to the NNPC for the mega stations.
He also said: “I want to assure you that we will give you all the support that you need. The state director of lands will take the NNPC project team round the state to look at alternative sites. I don’t know how many you are building, we can give you as many as ten sites if you want.”
The governor also stated that the supply of petroleum products was a key requirement for the prosperity of the country, adding that he was happy that NNPC was ready to invest heavily in the retail business to ensure that Nigerians are not exploited by private marketers.
Similarly, Ganduje said during the NNPC’s visit to Kano that the state considers NNPC an indispensable business ally for its socio-economic growth.

“Indeed, collaborating with the NNPC is indispensable if we are to achieve socio-economic development of the state. Kano State being the largest in terms of population and also the commercial nerve centre of the North, there is no better organisation to have an alliance with than the NNPC,” said Ganduje.
He said he had already directed the state’s commissioner for lands to work with the NNPC project team in selecting sites that meet the commercial requirement of the new filling stations in all the senatorial districts of the state.
According to him, “We know the philosophy behind establishing such retail stations. Considering that you are the custodians of crude oil and petroleum products in the country, one may wonder why you are into retail business.
“But those of us in governance understand the situation because if you leave everything to the marketers, then the problem of control especially of the price and availability will become difficult.”

Ganduje stated that NNPC mega stations have maintained business integrity and do not require any enforcement for compliance on approved prices of petroleum products.
The NNPC also said it has got similar support from the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, who it said pledged to work with it to build the retail outlets in the state.
