For the fans of Mojisola Akinwumi, ex-wife of Gbenga Obasanjo,
the long wait to see her back on the social scene may have been over. Mojisola,
daughter of a popular industrialist, Otunba Alex Onabanjo, had avoided
the social scene for some years, following the celebrated matrimonial crisis
with her ex-husband, Gbenga. At the height of the scandal that got media
attention, she shunned the social circle and related only with close friends
and family members who shared in her pains and believed in her.
But her sudden come-back and embrace of the social scene may not
be unconnected with the recent appointment of her new husband, Mustapha
Akinkunmi, as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State. Akinkunmi, who
holds degrees from the New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury and
Fordham University, Bronx, New York, had served in various capacities as a
consultant, financial advisor and business strategist with AT&T, Goldman
Sachs, Phibro Energy, First Boston (Credit Suisse), World Bank and Central Bank
of Nigeria, respectively.
Mojisola, on her own, has been busy with her Angelika Gift Shop
in Victoria Island, Lagos, which she opened last year with the dream of
reviving the dying gift industry.
Society Happenings recalled that Mojisola and Gbenga Obasanjo
were joined in holy matrimony in 2000. However, the marriage crashed in
2008, when the ex-president’s son accused the mother of his two children of
engaging in an extra-marital affair. Consequently, they sought dissolution of
the marriage in a court of law and their prayers were granted several months
after.
